James Bond: 007 lands in Istanbul!
Have you seen Istanbul featured in Skyfall?
007 Lands in Istanbul: Regarded as Ian Flemming’s favourite city, eagle-eyed movie goers will have noticed that the brand new James Bond movie “Skyfall” (the 23rd Bond film) features an action-packed pre-credit chase filmed on location in Istanbul. It’s been 49 years since Bond visited Istanbul, way back in “From Russia With Love”. A huge Box Office hit, James Bond: Skyfall is set to break a few records with the millions of movie-goers it’s attracting world-wide.
Critically acclaimed as one of the best Bond movies to date, Daniel Craig stars in his third Bond movie. And it certainly doesn’t disappoint. The pre-credit scene shows Bond in Istanbul. While in Istanbul, on direct orders from ‘M’ he must locate and retrieve a vital piece of computer hardware from an unknown assassin. We see Bond in hot pursuit of the assassin, travelling all over Istanbul by foot, train, car and motorcycles (along on the Grand Bazaar rooftop, of course) with the beautiful streets of Istanbul as his backdrop.
Viewers will no doubt have spotted that the Grand Bazaar (the one seen was a huge set creation featuring almost 200 market stalls and hundreds of extras) was located on Istanbul’s Eminönü Square on the banks of the Bosphorus, against the steps of the New Mosque. Istanbul is on the receiving end of a spot of classic Bond damage in the scene; market stalls come crashing down, trains get ripped apart and a few historical Ottoman remnants get knocked down – all props, of course.
Istanbul, with its vibrant culture and unique mix of old-meets-new provides an ideal setting for the Bond opening scene. Istanbul, with its dusty rooftops, centuries-old architecture and labyrinthine streets gives us a location we can really believe in – a world of secret agents and adventure.
So if you’re a James Bond fan and fancy a spot of location-hunting, why not head to Istanbul on a city break? Or perhaps combine an Istanbul holiday with a walking holiday in Turkey along The Lycian Way, Cappadocia or The Black Sea Coast for a truly unique and adventure-filled winter break. Visit the New Mosque featured so beautifully in Skyfall, take a boat ride along the Bosphorus and browse the bustling market Square of Eminönü – just watch out for any suit-wearing spies…
